What we are doing: |
- This project will consist of the reconstruction of the existing concrete pavement in both the eastbound and westbound directions and adding a concrete median barrier between the bounds. Also included is the addition of a third through-lane and weave/merge lanes between the interchanges of Ottawa Avenue/Ionia Avenue, Fuller Avenue and College Avenue. Along with the roadway work, three bridges will be completely replaced during this project. These are the Coit Avenue bridge over I-196 and the two bridges that carry I-196 over Lafayette Avenue.

How traffic is affected: |
| Stage I - During Stage I, traffic will be maintained by means of a modified full closure of the freeway allowing only local access within the closure at Fuller Avenue and College Avenue on westbound I-196 and Ottawa Avenue and College Avenue on eastbound I-196. The modified full closure with local access alternative was selected based on information gathered from several stakeholder and public meetings. Through traffic will be detoured by means of M-6, I-96 and US-131. Pedestrian access will be maintained at one bridge (Coit Avenue or Lafayette Avenue) while the other is being constructed.
Stage II - During Stage II, two lanes of through traffic will be allowed on both bounds of I-196 with access to Fuller Avenue and College Avenue, Ottawa Avenue will be open to traffic in Stage IIB on Westbound I-196, and on eastbound I-196 access to Fuller Ave. will be maintained, the Ottawa Ave. ramp will be open when the College Avenue ramp is closed. The College Avenue ramp will be open when the Ottawa Avenue ramp is closed.
