Michigan Higher Education Assistance Authority

The Michigan Higher Education Assistance Authority (MHEAA) was authorized by Act 77 of the Public Acts of 1960, as amended. MHEAA was established to enhance freedom of choice and equality of access to Michigan students seeking a postsecondary education. MHEAA administers a wide variety of state and federal scholarship, grant, and loan programs.

In addition, the MHEAA annually assists hundreds of thousands of Michigan citizens through public service and outreach initiatives, as well as a scholarship search service known as the MI-SEARCH Program.

Michigan Higher Education Student Loan Authority

The Michigan Higher Education Student Loan Authority (MHESLA) was created by Act 222 of the Public Acts of 1975 to provide loans for postsecondary education to students and parents. MHESLA offers several borrower benefits through their Michigan Direct, State Secondary Market, and Michigan Alternative Student Loan programs.

The authorities are governed by members appointed by the Governor with the advice and consent of the Michigan Senate. Members represent a variety of postsecondary and lending institutions, and Michigan citizens.

Michigan Merit Award

The Michigan Merit Award was established by Public Act 94 of 1999, as amended, to recognize academic achievement on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) tests and to help make postsecondary education more affordable.  The Michigan Merit Award Scholarship Act also provides a funding source for the Tuition Incentive Program (TIP) and the Michigan Nursing Scholarship (MNS). The Michigan Merit Award program is administered by the Michigan Department of Treasury and receives direction from the Michigan Merit Award Board.  The MNS program is administered by the Michigan Department of Treasury's Michigan Higher Education Assistance Authority (MHEAA).
