MPSC Grants 9-1-1 Surcharge Re-Hearing Requests for Grand Traverse and Calhoun Counties, Denies Requests by Huron and Muskegon Counties

Contact:  Judy Palnau (517) 241-3323

June 3, 2008

The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) today granted 9-1-1 surcharge rehearing requests by Grand Traverse and Calhoun counties, and denied re-hearing requests by Huron and Muskegon counties.

The MPSC on March 11 issued an order that approved or adjusted 9-1-1 surcharges submitted by 68 Michigan counties.

Between April 4 and April 10, Grand Traverse, Calhoun, Huron and Muskegon counties filed petitions for rehearing.

In its rehearing request, Grand Traverse County noted that due to an error in submitting information to the Commission, its 9-1-1 surcharge should be increased from 58 cents to 66 cents.  Today's MPSC order granted that request for rehearing and approved the requested 66-cent surcharge.

Calhoun County's request for rehearing was based on new information, seeking to reduce its surcharge from 65 cents to 60 cents.  The result is a cost savings for ratepayers and the consolidation of three 9-1-1 facilities into one.  In today's order, the MPSC granted the request for rehearing and approved the requested 60-cent surcharge.

The Commission today denied requests for rehearing by Huron County, finding that it did not submit sufficient support for approving a surcharge that would likely generate revenues 27 percent above the 2007 level - 10 times the statutorily permissible 2.7 percent; and by Muskegon County, finding that it failed to meet the standards for granting rehearing.

The MPSC is an agency within the Department of Labor & Economic Growth.

Case No. U-15489
