Our Mission

Protect public safety while respecting
the rights and dignity of all persons

ORGANIZATIONAL GOALS

In addition to our role of providing general law enforcement services, the department accepts the unique responsibility for the development and coordination of state-level programs, technologies, and specialized services that enhance enforcement and emergency response capabilities for the entire public safety community. Accordingly, strategies initiated by the department will improve the quality of life for the communities we serve by meeting the following organizational goals:  

  1. Prevent and investigate crime and enforce the law
  2. Improve traffic safety
  3. Provide for homeland security and emergency prevention, response, and recovery
  4. Provide the highest quality specialized services
  5. Enhance organizational performance and improve operational efficiencies

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Our success in realizing this vision requires the department's leadership to embrace change, employ technology, and implement progressive training, enforcement, and management practices. Members at all levels of the department will promote an organizational culture that contributes to the department's vision by:

  • Anticipating and reacting quickly to the needs of the people we serve and our public safety partners through the continual improvement and alignment of the organization and our services.
  • Enhancing opportunities to collaborate with our partners to develop innovative solutions to address statewide public safety issues.  
  • Maximizing the use of technology to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Empowering members to critically analyze problems and implement solutions that enhance the department's ability to provide service.

The department achieves its mission through leaders who distinguish themselves by  their ability to earn respect, instill confidence, and strengthen morale by recognizing individual contributions and achievements.

The effective management of the Michigan State Police requires our leaders to provide organizational vision to department members, public safety partners, and the people we serve through:

  • Hands-on leadership - by remaining close to the essential activities of the department and the people who perform these services.
  • Success through people - by promoting the desire in all department members to put forth their best effort by recognizing the value of individual contributions.
  • Optimistic commitment - to our mission and goals by proactively searching for opportunities to improve the department.
  • Reinforcement and support - to those individuals who offer contributions to a work environment that reflects dedication to the department's mission.
  • Commitment to responsibility - by ensuring all members understand the importance of the department's mission and are held accountable for their individual roles.
