September 24, 2009 - Bridgeport Post Members Recognized for Lifesaving Actions

Contact:  Sergeant Al Renz, Bridgeport Post, (989) 777-3700
Agency: State Police

LANSINGAt a special ceremony today in Lansing, Michigan State Police (MSP) Director Colonel Peter C. Munoz presented Motor Carrier Officer William Beam, Trooper Steven Escott, Trooper Matthew Korzek and Trooper Paul Oster with the MSP Lifesaving Award.  They are credited with performing significant actions resulting in the saving of a life.

On Oct. 8, 2008, Beam was completing a traffic stop when a motorist stopped to advise him that the passenger in his vehicle was having a heart attack.  Beam quickly determined the passenger had no pulse and was not breathing.  Korzek arrived to assist and the pair began to administer first aid.

After several minutes, Escott and Oster also arrived at the scene, bringing with them an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).  The officers administered a shock from the AED, after which they were able to detect the subject's pulse.

Upon reviewing the circumstances of this incident, the MSP Board of Awards concluded the quick actions and knowledge of first aid techniques by Beam, Escott, Korzek and Oster saved the man's life.

Beam joined the department in 2001, graduating as a member of the 13th Motor Carrier Recruit School.  He has served at the Bridgeport and West Branch posts.

Escott enlisted with the department in 1989, graduating as a member of the 106th Trooper Recruit School.  After graduation he was assigned to the Bridgeport Post.

Korzek enlisted with the department in 1998, graduating as a member for the 116th Trooper Recruit School.  After graduation he was assigned to the Bridgeport Post.

Oster enlisted with the department in 1999, graduating as a member of the 118th Trooper Recruit School.  After graduation he was assigned to the Bridgeport Post.
