This year’s annual Roadcheck Operation, to be held June 4-6, will focus on tankers that transport hazardous materials on highways across North America. The operation is one of the many law enforcement projects designed to emphasize homeland security in the aftermath of September 11.
Officers from the Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Division will be inspecting vehicles and drivers 24 hours a day over the three day operation, in conjunction with state, provincial, and federal personnel in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Officers will be looking specifically at the drivers and tankers transporting hazardous chemicals to ensure compliance with state and federal law.
The annual International Roadcheck, which began in 1988, is sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance. Roadcheck 2001 resulted in over 45,000 driver and vehicle inspections at more than 1,000 locations across North America. More than 2.5 million roadside safety inspections are conducted annually in North America. Last year, Motor Carrier officers conducted over 39,600 such inspections in Michigan.
