East Lansing - Officers from the Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Division inspected 895 commercial vehicles during last week’s 3-day Roadcheck Operation. A total of 154 vehicles (17% of the total inspected) and 52 drivers (6% of the total inspected) were placed out of service, meaning that defects had to be immediately repaired prior to the vehicle moving again. The out of service percentages are somewhat lower than the national average (approximately 24% for vehicles and 8% for drivers).
Officers discovered 25 hours of service violations, 14 false logbooks, 5 suspended truck drivers, and 6 drivers in violation of drug or alcohol regulations. Twenty-two drivers were operating vehicles without the proper license or endorsement. One driver was discovered operating on a revoked license and one driver was under age.
The focus of the effort was on the transportation of hazardous materials. A total of 101 hazardous materials vehicles were inspected, 11 of which were placed out of service for equipment violations and one was placed out of service for a driver violation.
Michigan’s Roadcheck was conducted in conjunction with all 50 states, all the provinces of Canada, the USDOT Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and the Mexican Federal Police. National results should be available in the following weeks.
