MSP Chaplain Corps - Welcome!

The Michigan State Police Chaplain Corps is comprised of chaplains who provide spiritual services to members of the Michigan State Police (enlisted and civilian) and their families, participate in department ceremonies and meetings, accompany officers on duty, and perform other related services.  They also counsel members and their families when requested, visit sick or injured members, and officiate at department funerals.  See "Mission" and "Purpose".

Chaplains hold an honorary rank of captain and are afforded all the courtesies of that position.  They wear the State Police captain's uniform when representing the department.  Chaplains do not carry firearms, though they are permitted to use the Training Academy's firing range.  See "Who We Are" for more information.

The service is voluntary, with each chaplain's automobile, telephone, and other duty-related expenses reimbursed.  It is expected that each chaplain devote 72 hours annually (an average of six hours or more per month) to the chaplaincy and attend a 2-day conference held each October in Lansing.

If you are interested in applying for the Chaplain Corps, please contact your local State Police post to express your interest. If the post has a need for a chaplain and the post commander supports your desire in pursuing a chaplaincy postion, you will be required to complete the application form. In addition, you must include a copy of your credentials, formal education, (diplomas, certificates of completion of specific courses, etc.) including theological school and a copy of your ordination papers and forward to the:

Michigan State Police Chaplain Corps
714 South Harrison Road
East Lansing, MI 48823

Telephone: (517) 336-6302
Fax: (517) 336-6230

Each applicant is asked to sign the consent statement in addition to the application form, indicating authorization for the department to examine records at various locations including past employment, education, criminal, court records, tax, and fiscal records.  This process conforms to the same background investigation conducted on candidates for trooper positions in the State Police.

If you are a member of the ordained clergy and believe you have a call to this service with the Michigan State Police, we would be honored to have you apply for the chaplaincy.
