May 2012: Stroke Awareness Month

WHEREAS, stroke is a cardiovascular disease that occurs when an artery or blood vessel is blocked by a blood clot or ruptures, resulting in a decreased blood supply to the brain, brain cell death and brain damage; and,  

 

WHEREAS, stroke can happen to anyone at any time, regardless of race, sex or age; stroke is among the leading causes of death in Michigan and throughout the nation, and remains a major cause of long-term adult disability; and,

 

WHEREAS, studies show that nearly 80 percent of strokes are preventable; citizens can reduce the risk for stroke by eliminating tobacco use and controlling alcohol use, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and increasing physical activity and exercise; and,

 

WHEREAS, during this month, we join with numerous individuals, families and organizations throughout the state to raise awareness of stroke and the steps citizens can take to reduce the risk of stroke; 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2012 as Stroke Awareness Month in Michigan.
