Tuesday, May 22, 2012: Maritime Day

WHEREAS, home to more than 40 commercial ports and nearly 80 recreational ports, Michigan is a national leader in maritime education, recreation, transportation and industry; and,

 

WHEREAS, Michigan's maritime history dates back to the 1600s when a vibrant commercial shipping industry began, and the numerous maritime museums in our state are dedicated to the preservation, research and education of Michigan's rich maritime heritage; and,

   

WHEREAS, for nearly 80 years, our nation has celebrated National Maritime Day to commemorate the American steamship, Savannah, making the first ever transoceanic voyage using steam power on May 22, 1933; and,

 

WHEREAS, on this day, we honor the maritime history of our Great Lakes state, and we encourage all citizens to recognize the many contributions of the maritime industry in Michigan's port communities and throughout our nation;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Tuesday, May 22, 2012 as Maritime Day in Michigan.
