June 2012: Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Month
WHEREAS, Myasthenia Gravis is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease that causes weakening of the voluntary muscles, the muscles that create movement and are typically under our control; and,
WHEREAS, Myasthenia Gravis occurs when normal communication between the nerve and muscle is interrupted where nerve cells connect with the muscles they control; and,
WHEREAS, the voluntary muscles most frequently affected by Myasthenia Gravis include those that control the eyes, facial expressions and swallowing; and,
WHEREAS, symptoms of Myasthenia Gravis include difficulty breathing, swallowing and chewing, fatigue and difficulty climbing stairs or standing from a seated position; and,
WHEREAS, with no known cure, we join with the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America's Great Lakes Chapter to raise awareness of Myasthenia Gravis in Michigan; we encourage citizens throughout the state to learn more about this neuromuscular disease in order to recognize symptoms and increase early detection;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 2012 as Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Month in Michigan.
