June 15 and the week of June 10, 2012: Elder and Vulnerable Adult Abuse Awareness Day and Week
WHEREAS, Michigan's elders and vulnerable adults are valued community members who deserve to live with respect and dignity; though severely underreported, it is widely recognized that elders and vulnerable adults are at risk of harm from abuse, neglect and exploitation; and,
WHEREAS, in 2011, nearly 21,000 cases of suspected abuse, neglect or exploitation were reported to the Michigan Department of Human Services' Adult Protective Services program; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan law provides protection to its vulnerable and older adult citizens; and,
WHEREAS, the Michigan Department of Human Services and the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging are committed to protecting these citizens from harm, and on this day and during this week, we raise awareness of elder and vulnerable adult abuse in Michigan; we encourage citizens to learn more about the signs of abuse in an effort to protect those in need and decrease abuse occurrences in our state;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Friday, June 15, 2012 and the week of June 10, 2012 as Elder and Vulnerable Adult Abuse Awareness Day and Week in Michigan.
