New Web cams provide International Bridge customers with a preview of travel conditions at both ends of the bridge

Contact:  Phil Becker, International Bridge Administration 906-635-5255, ext. 112
Agency: Transportation

May 9, 2008 - - Travelers can now make International Bridge crossing plans with up-to-the-minute views of the bridge traffic and weather, courtesy of new International Bridge Administration (IBA) Web cameras aimed at both the U.S. and Canadian ends of the bridge.

The new Web cams are available at www.michigan.gov/iba. The images are refreshed every five minutes, so customers can preview current conditions before leaving their homes or offices.

"Our goal with this highly anticipated project is to help our customers to make informed decisions with regard to bridge traffic conditions that may impact their travel plans," said Phil Becker, IBA general manager. "The IBA staff and the Joint International Bridge Authority (JIBA) Board of Directors are very pleased to offer this service to our customers prior to the start of the busy summer season."

The cameras are permanently aimed, so the view will not change. Aside from periodic maintenance, cleaning and adjustment, the cameras will be online seven days a week, 24 hours a day, year-round.

Purchase and installation of the cameras was part of a $60,000 project to add three cameras to the bridge security system, and upgrade the associated server.
