MDOT transfers M-107 jurisdiction to Ontonagon County Road Commission

Contact:  James Lake 906-786-1830, ext. 323
Agency: Transportation

June 19, 2008 -- To better reflect its local significance, jurisdiction of M-107 was transferred from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to the Ontonagon County Road Commission, effective June 4, 2008.

M-107, from the Porcupine Mountains State Park entrance east to the M-64 intersection near Silver City, is now an Ontonagon County primary road. The 9.6-mile section will be maintained by the county road commission, which will receive Act 51 funding directly to maintain it.

"Jurisdictional transfers are used to assign roadways to the appropriate level, whether it is MDOT, a county road commission or a municipal public works department," said Randy Van Portfliet, MDOT Superior Region engineer. "The correct assignment is critical to the proper allocation of the limited funds available to all road agencies."

The Ontonagon County Road Commission decided last week to rename the road the 107th Engineers Memorial Highway, in honor of the Michigan National Guard unit based in the Upper Peninsula.

"The Ontonagon County Road Commission is pleased to have this opportunity to work with MDOT to bring this transfer to fruition," said Mike Maloney, the road commission's engineer manager.

This jurisdictional transfer was made as part of a joint agreement by MDOT and the Ontonagon County Road Commission.
