July 1, 2008 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is suspending work and removing lane restrictions on 4 miles of US 31 from Winston Road to M 20 near Rothbury for the Fourth of July holiday weekend. All lanes will be open to traffic beginning Wednesday night, July 2. Work will resume on Tuesday, July 8.

There will be shoulder closures on US-31, but all travel lanes will be open for the additional traffic that is anticipated for the Rothbury Festival.

"No one is really sure what to expect for the festival, but MDOT is doing our part to make sure traffic flows as smoothly as possible on US-31," said Tim Judge, MDOT Muskegon Transportation Service Center manager.

Throughout the summer, northbound US 31 has been open from 3 p.m. on Fridays until 6 a.m. on Mondays to accommodate weekend travelers. Once the southbound stage of the project begins, US 31 will be open from 8 p.m. on Saturdays to 6 a.m. on Sundays.

The $6.5 million project began in April and will be completed in September. Work includes applying an asphalt stabilized crack relief layer, asphalt resurfacing, shoulder trenching and widening, extending the acceleration lanes, and making concrete joint repairs, drainage improvements, and safety upgrades.
