Experience life in the late 19th century at Fayette Historic Townsite, Garden Fayette is one of the nation's premier examples of a 19th century industrial community and company town. In operation from 1867 to 1891, its furnaces produced over 229,000 tons of pig iron to become the second largest producer of charcoal iron in Michigan. The voices and laughter of long-ago residents almost echo through the streets of this deserted town. | Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center Visitors can explore shipwrecks in real time via live video feeds, discover the Great Lakes' rich maritime past through innovative exhibits, and learn how underwater archaeologists work to preserve historic shipwrecks. Fostering these types of experiences is central to the National Marine Sanctuary Program's goal of inspiring Americans to care about our oceans and Great Lakes. | Tour the Governor's Mackinac Residence Over 100 years old, the Michigan Governor's Summer Residence has functioned as a summer home for eight Michigan governors and their families dating to 1943. A rare inside look into the 1902 cottage overlooking Mackinac Island's harbor. Free. Mackinac State Historic Parks offers free tours every Wednesday, 9:30-11:30 a.m., through August 27, 2008. |
