• Vintage Base Ball Game at Fort Mackinac, Mackinac Island, July 19, 2008, 7 p.m.
This is "base ball" as it was meant to be played: barehanded and by gentlemen's rules on the old Scout Barracks ball field behind Fort Mackinac. The Never Sweats have a history spanning 123 years. Lieutenant Edward Pratt of Fort Mackinac helped form the Fort Mackinac Base Ball Club in 1885, and at 7 p.m. on July 19, their history will be rewritten. On the large parade ground behind Fort Mackinac on Mackinac Island, which could be the oldest continually used ball field in Michigan, the Fort Mackinac Never Sweats will play the Mackinaw City Boys in a game of Vintage Base Ball. Learn an old-fashioned cheer, watch players get fined for smoking cigars on the field, and enjoy a good, old-fashioned game played by gentlemen's rules. John Hiller of the 1968 World Champion Detroit Tigers and U.S. Representative Bart Stupak will serve as co-captains. They play the Mackinaw City Boys for the second time ever, the first being on July 26, 1886, when the Never Sweats beat Mackinaw 23-14. One-hundred and twenty-two years later, can they do it again? Find out on July 19, and be a part of history. Mackinac Associates above heritage level enjoy the game for free. Game begins at 7 p.m.
