June 16, 2005– Now that the grilling and camping season is in full gear, it’s time to remember to use common sense and safety when grilling out or huddling around a campfire.
“As the days get longer the surrounding vegetation of a campfire or a grill can get very dry,” said Andy Neumann, State Fire Marshal. “By taking extra precautionary steps, grill and campfire injuries can be reduced – even avoided.”
Here are a few grilling and campfire safety tips to follow:
- Keep children at a safe distance from campfires and grills.
- Wear close-fitting clothing - no scarves or skirts.
- Make sure nothing flammable is nearby.
- Have a fire extinguisher or a bucket of water handy at all times.
- Keep at least a 3-foot distance between the campfire or grill and anything else. Make sure there's no dry vegetation nearby.
- Put out all fires before leaving the campsite or grill area.
“In the event of a fire, get your family to safety before attempting to put the fire out yourself. If the fire is spreading too quickly, get everyone away and then call 911,” added Neumann. “Also, remember to keep anything flammable away from fire and heat and teach everyone how to put out a clothing fire - stop, drop and roll.”
