Natural Resources Commission to Meet Oct. 9 in Lansing

Contact:  Mary Dettloff 517-335-3014
Agency: Natural Resources

Oct. 2, 2008

The Michigan Natural Resources Commission will hold its regular monthly meeting on Thursday, Oct. 9, at the Lansing Center, located at 333 E. Michigan Ave. in Lansing.

At 12:15 p.m., there will be a meeting of the NRC Policy Committee on Land Management in Room 202. The committee will receive updates on oil and gas activities, gas storage, conservation easements and will review its priorities for Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund applications.

At 1:45 p.m., the NRC Policy Committee on Wildlife and Fisheries will meet in Room 202 and receive an update on fisheries orders, the proposed Mio-McKinley trout regulations, spring turkey regulations and crossbows.

At 3:15 p.m., the NRC Committee of the Whole will meet in Room 201 to receive an update on Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), a legislative update and to review DNR Director Rebecca Humprhies' action items.

Public appearances before the NRC will start at 4:30 p.m. in Room 201. Persons wishing to provide public comment on any DNR issue to the NRC should contact Teresa Gloden at 517-373-2352 or glodent@michigan.gov either prior to the meeting or at the meeting site.

The NRC will consider three Wildlife Conservation Orders related to the recent discovery of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in a white-tailed deer in Kent County. The orders would ban baiting and feeding of deer and elk in the Lower Peninsula, require a mandatory deer check in the nine-township CWD surveillance zone in Kent County, regulate the removal of carcasses from the surveillance zone, and offer replacement kill tags to hunters who take a CWD-positive deer.

Director Humphries will act on several fisheries orders and will consider authorizing several land transactions. More information about the NRC, including the full agenda and related documents, is available on the DNR's Web site at www.michigan.gov/nrc.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
