FAQ
  Individual Income Tax
What should I do to have my income tax refund direct deposited?

Answer:

When you efile your return the Direct Deposit information that you supplied is sent electronically along with the tax return and/or credit information. You do not need to mail in a paper copy of Michigan Direct Deposit of Refund (form 3174).

Check with your financial institution to:

  • ensure they will accept Direct Deposit
  • obtain the correct Routing Transit Number and Account Number; and
  • if applicable, verify that it will allow a joint refund to be deposited into an individual account.

If you are filing a paper return, simply complete the Direct Deposit information that is found at the bottom of the MI-1040 tax return form at the time you file your Michigan income tax return. You will need to provide your account number, Routing Transit Number (RTN), and account type (savings or checking).

Routing Transit Number (RTN): The RTN is usually found between the symbols |: and |: on the bottom left side of your check. The first two digits must be 01 through 12 or 21 through 32. If you have any questions check with your financial institution for this number.

Account Number: Enter your bank account number up to 17 characters (both numbers and letters). The account number is usually found immediately to the right of the RTN on the bottom of your check. Include hyphens but omit spaces and special symbols. Enter the number from left to right and leave unused boxes blank. Do not include the check number.

Account Type: Please specify as to whether the account you wish to have your refund deposited is a checking or savings account.
